Responsive Websites – Are They For You?

In just about any website conversation we have these days, the topic of responsive design and development surfaces.  Responsive web design is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).

Does your business need a responsive website?  Yes.

Do you need to scrap what you have in order to develop a truly responsive website?  No.

Many business have either recently launched a new website, they are happy with what they have, or they do not have the time or budget to start fresh.  While these are all valid reasons for not fully jumping on board with a truly responsive website, we would highly recommend considering developing a tablet and mobile-friendly version of your website.  “Across virtually all websites we manage, we have seen mobile traffic jump significantly in the last 6-12 months, and only expect it to continue on this path.” stated Grant Chambers, Workhorse Digital’s CEO and Senior Strategist.

While responsive website development is our preferred approach to every new project, we also recognize that it might not be the right time for everyone.  If you are in the process of redesigning and developing your website, we would highly recommend using a responsive framework.  With the responsive movement being fairly new, there are many different approaches available, some which are good, some which are not.  Be sure to ask your web development partner to show you examples of their work, and to explain how they would approach the strategy, design and development of your project.
